Thursday 13th February is, of course, UNESCO World Radio Day. Check out all the amazing broadcasts and events happening globally, on the interactive map. Everything from a shortwave radio demonstration by Italian DXers, to community radio special programmes and more. For instance, K107 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, will celebrate this yeat’s theme of Diversity by marking:
Gender Equality in Media. Radio can be viewed as a male-dominated sector with gender inequality in its structures and decision-making, and in media content.
On World Radio Day – K107fm is proud to highlight the role of women in the organisation, with female members on our board of trustees and active roles on-air.

Some of our most prominent and popular shows are fronted by female presenters, with their following down to specialist knowledge of musical genres, community engagement and involvement alongside broadcast style.
We can be proud to say the female roles are not limited to co-presenter status and are independent shows across a spectrum of genres and timeslots including our drivetime shows.

K107fm is also proud of its continued links with the Queendom of Fife an online women’s magazine and community.
Set up with the purpose of showcasing the work and inspirational stories of women in Fife, K107fm is adding some of these stories to regular weekly programming. The station also supports new businesses receiving guidance from the QoF community giving them a platform to introduce and promote their venture on-air.
From celebrating the unsung and championing equality to raising money for charity and helping others in need, the Queendom of Fife celebrates love, kindness and community.
From our measurable metrics on social media we can see a higher proportion of interaction from female listeners.

So on World Radio Day we will have a special all-female playlist Drivetime show where we plan to highlight some of the women at our station and how they got into broadcasting. This both to highlight our gender equality and support our current recruitment aims to attract more volunteers of any diverse background. K107fm – Always Local, Always Vocal.
